Minecraft Rewind
We take a look back at some of the most interesting versions of Minecraft that you can play. There are hundreds of builds to choose from, but here are some of our favourites…
OLD_ALPHA RD-132211
This is the oldest version of Minecraft available. You start the game in a vast, empty field and you can add cobblestone with the left button and remove it with the right button. This version was actually never released to the public, but it shows you how the game started, over a decade ago, in May 2009! Any changes you make to the world will stick around forever, and remember if you try this, press escape to quit.
OLD_ALPHA 1.0.4
From July 2010, this is one of the earliest versions that actually looks like Minecraft and the first that people could buy. It has got trees, grass, beaches, flowers, mushrooms and water, as well as sheep! Like the earlier versions, this is only really interesting from a historical perspective – at this point, the game is far from being complete. That said, it still looks like Minecraft, and there is something fun about seeing just how much the game has developed over the years.
OLD_BETA 1.7.3
Ever wanted to see the original Far Lands? Who hasn’t?! Well, this is the last release of the game they were available in, from July 2011. Unfortunately, there isn’t a teleport command, so if you want to see them you will have to manually walk around 12,550,800 blocks away from the spawn point. Even if you don’t do anything else and can survive, it takes around a month of in-game action. It is basically impossible, but good luck if you want to try…
RELEASE 1.12.2
The final iteration of the World of Color update from September 2017 is the last version that allowed you to play Minecraft in 3D anaglyph! You can switch the option on and off in the video settings, so grab your red and blue 3D glasses and give it a spin.
RELEASE 1.13.2
Do you miss the old versions of villages? Well, this version from October 2018 is the last full release to contain the original style. This was an update to the Update Aquatic, so it is pretty similar to the current version in lots of ways, it is mainly the buildings that look different.
SNAPSHOT 3D Shareware 1.34
One of several April Fool’s updates to the game, this version is found before Snapshot 19w14a in the game listings and turns Minecraft into a game resembling the old 1990s PC game DOOM, complete with low-resolution graphics and a soundbar. There is a little custom level to play through, where you have to find keycards, which is great fun and probably nostalgic for adults too.
SNAPSHOT 20w14infinite
This is the insanely fun Ultimate Content update, which adds new randomised dimensions accessible through the ‘funky portal’, which you can create by throwing a book and quill obtained from the infinite box of books into a regular Nether portal. You can spend hours just hopping from world to world, and there are loads of other fun additions. Fire it up and have a play with it!
